To garden or not to garden, NO QUESTION!

Mom has been a gardener for decades and for last ten or more years she has become a really really good one even took master gardener courses here in Berkeley.

Me, not so much; always seemed like so much work and still not keen on flowers and more decorative gardening. But I have become a convert for edible gardening. Since Mom got the house in Berkeley and started making jam out of the plums from the tree in back yard I have slowly come around to how much fun it is grow your own food.

This year is especially fun, we have the HUGEST shallots you have ever seen, basil, green beans, potatoes, rhubarb, cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, rosemary, oregano, thyme as well as the plum, lime and meyer lemon trees. We also started some asparagus but that take two years for the first crop to be edible. We tried snap peas earlier but did not get very many and we had spinach which did well, the tomato plant is not looking great but we have hopes it is now recovering.

There is nothing quite as satisfying has growing your own food, the flavor is very different than store bought in most cases and the money you save, yes it takes time to grow these plants. Shallots are planted in the winter and we are only now harvesting them but we have such a huge crop it should last us ages. And when you think how expensive they are in the store to buy and I am really excited about the potatoes! I LOOOOVE potatoes.

Mom and I are probably going to a do a veggie hash tonight with some of today's haul:

Yup I think I am finally a convert to edible gardening at least!
